Consultation Services
General Guidelines:
- Consult contacts are available on the Smart Web and click on “On-Call” tab.
- When admitting to subspecialty services, attending/fellow is responsible to notifying the admitting resident to discuss plan for admission (not ED staff).
- There will often be multiple contacts for certain specialties (page the attending if resident or fellow is not listed):
- Page the resident for the following services:
- ENT
- Neurosurgery
- Orthopedics
- Surgery
- Page the fellow for the following services:
- Allergy
- Cardiology
- Child psychiatry
- Gastroenterology
- Infectious Disease
- Neonatology
- Neurology
- Plastics
- Page the nurse/nurse practitioner for the following services:
- Baclofen pump issues
- Heart transplant (coordinator)
- Peritoneal dialysis
- Page the attending for the following services:
- Child Abuse
- CVICU
- Endocrinology (sometimes will be fellow but listed as attending)
- Hem/Onc (sometimes will be fellow but listed as attending)
- Nephrology
- PICU (sometimes will be fellow but listed as attending)
- Rheumatology (sometimes will be fellow but listed as attending)
- Special situations:
- Airway foreign body
- GI foreign body
- Face – will have service listed covering at that time.
- IR on-call team
- GI magnet ingestions – consult surgery
- Short gut patients with a CVL and fever – admitted to surgery
- After hours on-call radiology resident (for CT prelim reads):
- 83129 or page “UAB Radiology 2nd call” via UAB Radio Paging Tab on SmartWeb
- On Tuesdays and Saturdays, Brookwood radiology residents are on call, call CT and ask them for on-call radiology resident.
- Ophtho – call Callahan ER (205) 325-8100 and ask desk to have ophtho resident call you back.
